The Bahr al-Baqar sewage treatment plant in northwest Egypt is one of the largest in the world, with a capacity of 5 million m3/day to supply a population of 11.5 million people, and is also the largest in Africa.

The plant comprises four water treatment lines with a daily processing capacity of 1,250,000 cubic metres each. It is the largest in Africa and one of the biggest in the world.

The plant is equipped with advanced processes for pumping raw water, coagulation, flocculation, decantation, filtration and disinfection to produce water of optimum quality for irrigating local crops.

The treated water is used to irrigate some 140,000 hectares of farmland alongside the Suez Canal. Until now there has been at risk of contamination due to irrigation with untreated agricultural, industrial and municipal wastewater.

As a technological partner, ACCIONA has undertaken the process engineering, the electromechanical equipment, the supervision of assembly operations and the commissioning of the plant, guaranteeing the specified quality and treatment parameters and selecting and supervising the teams and processes in the plant.
