ACCIONA and its partner, Dragados, have begun work on Lot 2 of the undergrounding of the A-5 highway, a project that will be key to transforming mobility in the southwest of Madrid.

The official groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Borja Carabante, Madrid City Council’s delegate for Urban Planning, Environment and Mobility, and José Luis Martínez-Almeida, mayor of Madrid, as well as representatives from ACCIONA and the other parties involved.

The project involves the undergrounding of the A-5 highway between Batán and Avenida de Portugal. A 1.5-kilometer tunnel will be built with three lanes in each direction, as well as lanes reserved for buses and high-occupancy vehicles (BUS-HOV). The aim is to improve traffic flow on this important corridor to Madrid and offer a more sustainable alternative to private transport.

The lot awarded to the ACCIONA consortium has a budget of 150 million euros and an estimated completion period of 25 months. During this time, complex works will be carried out, including the connection of the new tunnel to the existing infrastructure of Avenida de Portugal and the integration of advanced ventilation, signaling and traffic control systems connected to the Calle 30 network.

URBAN TRANSFORMATION

The undergrounding of the A-5 will not only reduce vehicle congestion, but will also allow the creation of a new urban space on the surface, favoring pedestrian and bicycle mobility and improving the connection between key areas such as Casa de Campo, Cuña Verde de Latina and Madrid Río. This action is part of the Paseo Verde del Suroeste, an urban transformation project that aims to better integrate this area of the city and reduce the environmental impact of traffic.

In this way, the project will contribute to improving the quality of life for residents by reducing surface traffic, noise pollution and gas emissions, while the new pedestrian and cyclist space will create a safer and more accessible area for its users. In addition, the traffic reorganization will improve the connection between the districts of Latina and Moncloa-Aravaca, facilitating access to green areas and reducing travel times.
